time to throw the towel in....
time to give ALLLLLL I've got....
Going through the experiences of various people... they seem to be seriously playing with the time they have with them...
DI in 25 min. flat or VA in 20 min flat and forget the RC's blah blah...

Moral is.. I have to get a high score .. do whatever for it.. If I find a section easy give it a whole lotta time to really ace it.. and then clear cut offs elsewhere..
If I am sure of clearing cut-off by VA ... chuck the RC's..
If DI is difficult, choose a couple of sets.. blast them and move on..

At no point in the 2.5 hrs should I be wasting time in the paper... PERIOD.
I HAVE to do all possible easy questions in the paper .. no matter where they are...

come the next mock... quick.. I'll KILL YOU...

The journey continues...

Happiness/Sadness ..... Ecstacy/Disenchantment ....
Parts of the game... huh.. easier said.. I'd rather "easier said in retrospection.."
It is NOT easy to go through them one after the other over and over again.... Requires TRUE character..
I think people are able to put these things in perspective only once they've achieved their goals,
the process/journey is extremely tough and if one doesn't get through.. he keeps pondering over it for the rest of his life.....

Past 2 weeks and I have seen 99.4, 84.5, 97.1 ... depression reigns supreme...
I rubbish off the mock IIFT mock SNAP exams but I get extremely low scores there... (probably the trouble bells are sounding.... I don't have time to hear them... too busy CATting to...)

Can someone help me make sense of CAT or rather Mock CAT as of now...??
WHY DON'T MY SCORES IMPROVE.....!!...??

3 consequtive 97's and a feeling of satisfaction creeps in...

hell.. 12 in english was a disaster. -- was not at peak concentration in that section.
not permissible.. not at all .. when I am wooing the sexy Miss 98. (he he.. I mean 98 %ile)

I know that a good paper and me performing at my best will surely fetch me a date with her..
Destination finale or the lady I'd love to marry for life, gorgeous Miss 99 is surely pretty finicky
and I'll have to think of something new to get her.

Date with 98 it is for now... :) (a wink)

THOUGHTS

Here are some thoughts that have come to me while being in the state of disappointment(refer the bost below)

It's all about practice .... Forget attitude (stakes are too high to have a bad/negative attitude) Forget aptitude (u either have it or not, in any case u can't do anything about it)
PRACTICE -- Yes, that's the only thing in ur hand.. do it like mad...

A guy like me, scoring 17.33 in VA just because of good practice of late strengthens the argument.
DI -- A section where I've allways been strong went to abysmal levels and the fact remains that it happened because of my being underpracticed. Actually, I was slightly over-confident, I wasn't giving it full attention.
Point remains that in the actual CAT, I won't rely on VA.. (more the better), QA is unpredictable, so DI has to be my strength.
The bottomline in the strategy has to be 35X3 + 15 to the section which I've felt is the most crackable.
So, when I'll be relying on DI the most during the actual... it has to be practiced the most.
Doesn't mean that QA and VA can be relaxed.. should continue doing whatever I am doing for them.
In addition, DI has to be practiced. (when,how.. remain the key questions now)..

I got doomed in the 2nd mock cat... (sad, disappointed,ashamed)

U must be wondering, why ashamed..!!!
Reason : I consider myself to be good at DI..
I got royally screwed (hook, line and sinker ; left, right and center) in DI in this mock....

Some analysis :
1. Missed sitters in QA. (Reading all of the questions, marking the doable ones and then concentrating on them for the rest of the time seems to be the way to go...)
2. DI got screwed because a) Lack of practice... because of which I had to give lotsa time on easier questions and then did the 2 markers in a frenzy.b)Made a couple of guesses in DI --- will NEVER do it again..
3. Though I scored well in VA, some of the answers were extremely contentuous, so cannot afford to relax..

Percentile -- ummm.. expecting around 95-96.. let's see..

DIVINE BLUNDERS

Was extremely busy of late with lots a stuff happening.
So couldn't post here.
But welcome me back and I assure you that I'll flood you with all the posts...
First things first... My first MOCKCAT happened last sunday....
va-14.66 (cutoff 13.33)
qa-10.33 (cutoff 6.66)
di- 11.00 (cutoff 9.33)
Total-36

Results -- overall ~97%ile. But there were many people above me, who had not cleared sectional cut-offs, so an AIR of 136. Not bad when no. of students were ~10k.
So, at best an "acceptable" start.
But what went wrong...........ANALYSIS......
DIVINE BLUNDERS
1. One DI set (3 ques./4marks). Some initial calculations were required before moving to the questions and I end up calculationg 65-15 as 40 ... and miraculously all 3 ques had implications of this "divine blunder".. huh 4 marks and I wud have been into 98's
2. What, u think I can't make any more such mistakes... wait here comes my second one.
Question says "After how many digits will u encounter an odd digit..". I solve the problem and then count the digits .. yeah 5th digit is odd and options .. yeah yeah 5 is there.. I cracked it...
What the heck.... it is "encountred" after 4 digits ...... 2.67 straight off.....

There were more but not as divine as these.
Any type of errors can be tolerated but these... goooooooooood..........

CAT Prep. Strategy

I started preparing for CAT (rather made up my mind to give CAT ) on 24th April.
Did I hear "Tooo late buddy..". Yes I admit, I am a bit late but "Better late than never..". So no wasting time, let's put on the gears and move on.
15 days have passed since the day and all I have done is that I have made a significant progress in maths. While that is good, I feel I should have a regular study plan.
This is what I have thought:
Now let's start from the end (as I allways plan from the end even in my project work).
Let's take the end date as 12th Nov.(Last 6-7 days will be spent in revision which can be planned later.Also, if there is some specific area where I am not confident, it can be taken up then.)
I need to take 30-40 mock cats.
Each mock CAT will take 3 days.
1st Day -- take the test, calculate the score, see the questions which went wrong and why did they go wrong. Enter the mistakes and score in an excel.
2nd Day -- Do the entire paper with no timelines and find which easy questions did I miss out on
and why did I miss them out, again record them in excel.
3rd Day -- The 2 days work will throw some topic which needs more attention.This is the day for revision and strengthening the basics.
As the 3rd day will be saved on some occasions and the summation will give me a few days where I can decide to take more tests or revise a few things.
Taking the minimum number of tests to be 30, it will take 90 days.
This brings me to the date of Aug12. As I will be exerting more towards the end, I can shift Aug-12
to Aug 15(just to make it synonymous with an imp day.. yes the Independence Day).
Independence day will be the day I will start taking regular Mock CAT's.
As I would prefer to give some sectional tests and revise the whole thing once, before moving to MockCAT's, I will remove the last 15 days for the same.Hence, I need to roughly complete my basics
by 31st July.
hmmmm... now it becomes interesting...... how to do it..??
I have to study 3 hrs a day. (Why 3..? because it is a trade off between 2(too less) and 4(burning myself) ).
The 3 subjects can be managed in the following way:
Day 1: Maths - 2hrs, DI/DS - 1hr
Day 2: DI/DS - 1 hr, VA/RC - 2hrs
Apart from this I'll be reading books (which have good english) daily for at least half an hour before going to bed.The books will be on various ongoing relevant topics. This will help me in 2 ways
1. I would gain knowledge for GD/PI. -- Whatever I read, I will put it here (at my blog) just to make a summary of what I've read.
2. It would expose me to various styles of writing and also inculcate a reading habit.
Some people are pressing me to do a word list which I, personally, do not believe in.
If the need arises, will find time to do it.

Looks like a good strategy... doesn't it...
Implementation remains the key as allways.

Infy Vs Rest (To switch or not to)

This is one of the most debated topic of late.
Let's analyse this in detail.
Firstly let me put accross the statements that I've heard in favour of Infy..
-- Infy has a good work enviornment. U won't find it at other places.
-- Infy quotes the salary and others quote CTC.
-- Infy has better growth opportunities.
Now the statements against it...
-- Infy is a govt. org.
-- Salary is too low.
-- Onsite is on luck.

The points in favour of Infy have been given by my seniors and the ones against by fellows.
Let me make it clear that I am neither in favor nor against Infy.

My Views:
Infy has a good work env. (Combined 1st and 3rd points) -- What exactly is "good work env."?
The definiton I got on googling --
"This includes providing good and safe working conditions, equal employment opportunities, impartial selection procedures and opportunities for employee development."

Infy does provide good work env. but does that mean other places don't.
Talking to my friends in other companies extinguishes this doubt.
Infy does provide better work env but only in some respects.
According to me, they are:
1. Job security
2. High quality software development infrastructure.
3. Growth opportunities based on merit more than any thing else.
I know, ppl would say lots of -ve stuff here but trust they would remain the same everywhere.
I have listed down the key differentiators only.

Infy quotes the salary and others quote CTC : True but others do pay higher salary than Infy. No question about it.

Negatives of Infy :

Infy is a govt. org -- True.. There is a lot of beaurocracy but it would similarly be in any organisation of the size of infy.
Onsite is on luck -- True... But it remains same throughout the industry.
Salary is too low -- True it is lesser than some of the fast growing, dynamic organisations.
The point is that on an average the fast growing, smaller org's pay a lot more than the
huge organisations. That holds true for any sector/ any industry.

So finally where should one be a smaller dynamic org. or a larger slower org (like infy).

My take on this is that a job in a smaller company is a high risk, high return business.
Returns are high because effort and risk is also high.

One should go and take such a risk only when he is well prepared for it.
Which means he is extremely confident of survival and also has good requisite skills for his level.
If u r really good -- go and persue your dreams.

If you are not -- work on them first and then decide anything.

My reasons of staying back -- I get lots of time for myself which I spend towards
realisation of personal goals. I am sure this won't be available at any other place.
